Add Purchase
After you've setup your trip, select your trip to start adding purchases.
To add a purchase, touch the (+)
on the top right of the 'Summary', 'Purchases' or 'Trip Details' screens.
Adding a purchase
The typical steps in adding a new purchase are if there are foreign currencies on a trip:
- Adding the amount.
- Toggling the use tax button, if you want to separate out tax.
- Choosing the country.
- Refreshing the currency exchange rate.
- Checking the amount in your own currency.
- Editing details.
The typical steps in adding a new purchase are if there are no foreign currencies on a trip:
- Adding the amount.
- Toggling the use tax button, if you want to separate out tax.
- Editing details.
Changing countries
If your trip has been setup to include more than one country, you can change the country while you are adding purchases.
Simply touch the flag in the amount section. In the following example, touching the Argentine flag will bring up a selector for the three South American countries that are set up for this example trip.
The selector will automatically dismiss after a few moments, or you can touch outside it to dismiss it immediately.
Note you will not be offered this option if you have no foreign countries on your trip.
Editing a purchase with tax
While you are editing a purchase, you can toggle the 'Use Tax' button
if you want to separate out taxes or not.
If you toggle 'Use Tax' to on, you will see three extra fields in the 'Purchase Amount' section as well as the original 'Price':
- Price: The original pre-tax price.
- Tax Rate %: The percentage of tax on the original purchase amount. Just enter the original number as there is no need to divide it by 100. For instance, enter "5" for "%5", not "0.05".
- Tax: The calculated tax rate on the original purchase amount.
- Total: The total purchase including all taxes.
Toggling 'Use Tax' to off will clear out all tax related fields.
Setting currency exchange rates
You can retrieve exchange rates from the internet by touching the 'Refresh'
button. Retrieving rates requires either a Wi-Fi or cellular network connection. Once you have retrieved rates, they will be saved for next time.
When adding a purchase, you always have the option of setting your own exchange rate. This can be useful if you have an exact rate in mind. Just touch the grayed out word, 'Exchange', to start.
Editing details
Details of the purchase are used in categorizing and sorting of the purchase summaries. The date and category are pre-populated, while the rest are optional. If the current categories, subcategories or payments don't fit your needs, you can always customize them.
- Date: The date of the purchase.
- Category: A top level grouping, such as 'Accomodations'.
- Subcategory: A secondary level group, under a top level grouping. For instance 'Hotel', under 'Accomodations'. Once a category has been selected, only the appropriate subcategories will be available.
- Payment: The purchase payment method.
- Notes: A description of the purchase.
Date
The date is pre-populated with the current time whenever you add a new purchase. However, you always have the option of setting a specific date or time for the purchase. Touch the 'Now' button to set the date to the current date. Touch the 'Reset' button to undo any changes you have made.
Category
The category is pre-populated with the default category set in options. To set the category, simply touch the category you want. A check will appear next to the selected category.
Subcategory
Subcategory is optional. The list of subcategories is dependent on the currently selected category. For instance, if you have selected the 'Gift & Souvenirs' category, the subcategories 'Gift', 'Souvenirs' and 'None' will be available. Since subcategory is optional, you can unset it by selecting 'None'.
While editing, if a subcategory is missing, it can be immediately added by touching 'Add new subcategory'. To manage your subcategories, go to Settings.
Payment
Payment is optional. Setting a payment is much like setting a category or subcategory.
Notes
Notes are optional. In a future version of the app, notes will be searchable. Notes will appear in exported reports.
