Where do the rates come from?
Rates are retrieved and aggregated from five sources:
Scenarios
Shopper's scenario
A British traveller is spending the day in Paris. She sees this amazing pair of shoes for €279. She checks the rate and sees that it will only cost her about ₤249.
She pays €300 leaving her with €21 or about ₤19.
Merchant's scenario
A small Canadian merchant sells his artwork at a popular tourist attraction which brings many international visitors. An American customer wants to buy one of his products costing $39.95 CAD using American dollars.
The merchant refreshes the exchange rate and sees that the current rate for 1 Canadian dollar is only 80 US cents! But he doesn’t want to give that rate... he wants to put a premium on using US currency, so he enters in 0.85 instead.
After entering the price, he quotes $30.56 USD for the product. The customer pays $35 USD and then receives $5.23 back in Canadian currency.
Currency exchange desk scenario
An Aussie backpacker is in Bangkok and wants to exchange $200 AUD. There is usually a spread between the buy/sell rates so he manually enters the rate (20.9250) that is posted instead of using the internet rate. He sees that he should be getting ฿4185.
